When I did one of my W126 I kept most of the O.E system including the kidneys, and just used mild steel to make a 2 into 1 rear pipe with no silencer. Still S class quiet at idle and cruising, just a bit more V8 rumble. When floored it made quite a noise, but sounded very nice. It certainly drew eyes away from a modern AMG or two when I left MB.
